I sit with about 60 Brides per year. my one goal is to find a creative aspect in that bride that will make her wedding unique, and therefore memorable.
Generally, since brides have been dreaming of this day for years, they have a few great suggestions. But the obstacle to a Great Wedding is that the brides simply don't know what happens at a Reception - they envision only the Announcements and some music, and maybe a game or fun joke.
However, I encourage all brides-to-be to be as creative as possible. Take this Blog Layout. I kept it really simple so you can read it and interact. And likewise, sometimes a simple reception is beautiful. But with THIS blog I'm just passing information, I'm not trying to create a grand event! Otherwise I would have added Splash and Color, and Unique Fonts, Over-the-Edge Copy, etc. You need to think of your Wedding Reception in the same way!
First step is to peruse the Schedule of Reception Events from the Planning section of my website (http://www.starrynitedjs.com/). There you'll find all the activities of a traditional reception. You can follow each step ceremoniously, or trash it and create your own agenda! It's YOUR WEDDING!
Take any aspect from the list and garnish it! Grand Entrance Announcements - I've seen quite elaborate choreography as I announce each Bridal Party couple; Vogue-ing, Football Passes, Spinning onto the Floor. Again, really be creative. Every unique aspect of your wedding will stick itself to the guests' brains, and give them something grand to discuss!
Music? Why not call a local high school and offer to pay the Jazz Ensemble $200 to play the Cocktail Hour? Or ask me (the DJ) to create an Ethnic Cocktail Hour to complement the Fajita Buffet you've planned?
Why not play Old Love Songs during dinner to get the older crowd on their feet - there's nothing like "I Can't help falling in love" by Elvis to bring back a flood of youthful memories. Then add a Tango and ask your never-to-shy anut/uncle to show us how they used to do it! Have a Swing-dance segment! or an all-Beatles Dance-off! Any great DJ will sit with you and plan all of this out - the crazier, the more memorable and fun!
Have the Groom wear the Garter, and you seductively pull it from HIS leg! Speaking of the Garter Pull (the bride sits and the groom reaches in to remove the garter), I've seen som pretty sick things! Once we faced the bride toward the crowd and a kid snuck behind her and put a slimy oiled baby doll under her skirt. When the groom dug around he wrenched the doll from under the gown and jumped back in horror! Who will EVER forget that one!
Always remember that it's YOUR wedding. Find Vendors that will sit with you and help create a fantastic show! Forget the over-rated Uplighting - inject some FUN into your reception! call me and I'll help you!
